The Bewilder Box Initiative
A long time ago (the 1980’s) in a City not too far away (Brighton & Hove)…
The Bewilder Box initiative was born. It was the brain child of Dr Benjamin Wilder Sr, a brilliant and compassionate man whose ultimate goal was to create a disaster recovery plan for the human race. What would happen if we faced a global catastrophe such as a meteor strike or an alien invasion? How would we recover and who would lead mankind to salvation?
To find the answers to these questions, Dr Wilder and his team devised the Bewilder Box assessment; the ultimate test of brain power, cooperation, leadership, logic and strategy, in hope of finding the best of the best. These candidates, if successful, would become pioneers, leading the human race into the new world.
The work of the initiative was deemed a great success, until suddenly, mere weeks into the initial subject screenings, Dr Wilder mysteriously vanished along with his research. Without the leadership of the Doctor the initiative floundered and disbanded…
Dr Benjamin Wilder Jr, one of the brightest minds of his generation, has spent the last 20 years following in his father’s footsteps. Painstakingly piecing together fragments of research and resurrecting the initiative, he is driven by a desire to honour his family name and complete what was started over 30 years ago. The Bewilder Box Initiative once again opens for business…
You are new recruits tasked with completing whatever test or mission Dr Wilder Jr chooses for you.
Dr Wilder Junior (Played by Knightmare Live's Paul Flannerly):
The young Benjamin Jr. was an exceptionally gifted child and was only 14 years of age when his father disappeared, an event that left him devastated.
One day however, while looking through a box of his father's untouched belongings, he discovers a letter, which is addressed directly to him. It offers no indication of his father's whereabouts, but urges him to continue the work of The Bewilder Box Initiative and complete his research into the top secret Project Arc. Most importantly, the letter offers an apology. Tearful, but with a renewed sense of purpose, Ben vows to complete his father's work.
In 2016 the Bewilder Box Initiative reopens. Benjamin Jr's methods are unorthodox and he is most certainly not your conventional scientist…some might even categorise him as "mad". His gift though is undeniable and it could not be argued that the fate of the world would be safer in any other hands.
Dr Benjamin Wilder Senior (Played by Knightmare's Hugto Myatt aka Tregard):
Benjamin Sr. was both a charming and eccentric man of science and the founder of the Bewilder Box Initiative. As a student he was lost and he spent many years observing his peers searching for inspiration and direction; some studied time travel, others concentrated on teleportation, a few even tried their hand at Dinosaur cloning but an alarming majority designed highly sophisticated science weapons in the pursuit of financial gain. It was near inevitable to Benjamin that at some point, one of these grade A plonkers was going to make a monumental balls up; the kind of balls up that could threaten the very existence of mankind. And with that Dr Wilder discovered his purpose and founded the Bewilder Box initiative, an organization devoted entirely to the preservation of the human race. Progress was fast and steady until suddenly, in the autumn of 1989, Dr Wilder Sr. vanished never to be seen again…
D.A.V.E (Data Analysing Virtual Entity) is an artificially intelligent super-computer tasked with the day to day running of the Bewilder Box facility. Back in the 80's D.A.V.E represented the height of modern computer technology, these days however, his processing power matches that of 3 freeview boxes, which can make the complex algorithms and data analysis of the initiative quite a frustrating experience for him. Despite this D.A.V.E loves his job, and boasts a cheery nature and can do attitude, making him both a valuable and essential member of the Bewilder Box team.
Dr Connor/The Masternet 9000 (Played by Red Dwarf's Norman Lovett aka Holly):
Dr Connor is one of The Bewilder Box initiatives top minds and in his own words "The go to guy, for all things AI". Tasked with creating a brand new super computer system, to replace the antiquated D.A.V.E, Dr Connor's monumental noggin births The Masternet 9000 a system designed in his likeness and so sophisticated that it is capable of self-learning.
Unfortunately for Dr Wilder Jr and the rest of the team, The Masternet 9000 finds the day to day tasks of the initiative (ordering tea bags and switching on lights when people clap) pretty dull and opts to stage a mutiny. With his dry wit, super intelligence and love of Michael Jackson, The Masternet 9000 could potentially pose an almighty threat to the human race. But are his intentions really that bad? Perhaps it's not quite so black and white.
The Bewilder Box Crew:
The Bewilder Box initiative is crewed by a rag tag bunch of unusual characters, each exceptionally talented and bizarre in equal measure. You may encounter Barry, the cockney Quantum Mechanic, Dr Ridley, the eccentric Quantum Scientist or even Dr Kramer, the part-time model.
You and your team are new recruits, tasked with completing the Bewilder Box assessment and qualifying for inclusion in the program. Do you have what it takes to answer this unfathomable challenge with a hearty laugh and a self-assured thumbs up? Can you complete the various tasks, challenges and brain tickling puzzles before the time limit expires? Will you uncover the secret of Dr Wilder Sr's mysterious disappearance all those years ago? You have 60 minutes to find out… Good luck.
